Subject: dhcp3-client: resolv.conf not always created
Date: Wed, 4 Dec 2002 11:59:46 -0500
Package: dhcp3-client
Version: 3.0+3.0.1rc9-5
Severity: normal

The function make_resolv_conf in /etc/dhclient-script sometimes
won't create a resolv.conf file when it should. Some dhcp servers
I've used have returned domain name servers, but not a domain name;
however, make_resolv_conf requires both. Changing the && to an ||
is a quick fix.

What kind of servers do this? It sounds like wrong behaviour, though I'd
have to look it up to see if it actually violates any standard.

I'm afraid I don't know, and I no longer have access to the network
on which I most recently noticed this. I'll make sure to check if
it happens again.

At any rate, this seems like an obvious case of being liberal in
what you accept.

I just ran into this same bug when attempting to get my broadband
connection running. The "&& to ||" patch fixed everything, but I'm
sure there are many users who will not look at this bugreport and
implement that fix - something really must be done in the package, by
default, to allow it to cope with these situations gracefully.

Thanks,
Christopher Martin

is written if no domain name is returned.

This bug has been fixed in unstable, but unless there is another delay with
releasing sarge, will probably remain in sarge, as the dhcp3 package has
been prevented from entering sarge due to its interaction with d-i, and the
fact that d-i rc3 has been frozen.

This bug was fixed in 3.0.1-2, but reopened when it didn't look like this
version was going to enter Sarge.

As it happens, this version did make it into Sarge, so all is now right with
the world.
