Subject: apache: Apache depends on libdb.so.2 which libc6 no longer provides
Date: Thu, 08 Aug 2002 05:47:54 -0500
Package: apache
Version: 1.3.26-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
Well, first of all, ignore all the stuff below, because this is the
"fixed" configuration that I have gotten to. Ben dropped db1
compatibility support in 2.2.5-13 (released to sid yesterday), and this
removes libdb.so.2, and this causes apache to choke on startup with the
error message:
Starting web server: apache/usr/sbin/apache: error while loading shared
libraries: libdb.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory
And ldd /usr/sbin/apache reveals that it is indeed missing:
libdb.so.2 => not found
But, when I step libc6 back to 2.2.5-10, everything is peachy. Now, I
don't know if this is a case of Ben not doing his homework (the
changelog states that the only issue he knew of was with the Coda
people), or if its with apache not stating its depends explicitly
enough, but I had a guess that it was more of the latter which is why I
am reporting the bug here.

Subject: apache building depends on ndbm.h db1/ndbm.h
Date: Thu, 08 Aug 2002 17:13:27 +0200
on several places
mod_rewrite.h
mod_auth_dbm.h
eapi has some depency too
(i built fixed build with fake includes from gdbm... ie. symlinking ndbm.h
to gdbm-ndbm.h, but dunno if those modules will work)
btw. all apxsed apache modules has to be recompiled. I am almost sure
this is libc6 problem, since libc6 maintainer should wait with dropping
dependency only after all other packages wouldn't use db1 :(

yup, the whole mess needs to be rebuilt and transitioned to libdb4.0.
i don't have time to think about these things right now ;-(

yes, libc6's removal of support for libdb.so.2 was premature.

In light of the extra info provided to this bug (155904) as well as the
discussion on debian-devel, I'll go ahead and lump these bugs together
since they really are the same bug. Oh, and if I screw this up (not a
Debian developer here, just trying to help clean up the bug I filed),
someone can feel free to either: a) tell me what to do, or b) do it
themselves.

Since the related bug #156146 (libc6: Missing library libdb.so.3) has
been closed and an update apache package has been uploaded, is it
possible to close this bug?
Alternatevely is it possible to downgrade the severity? Please note that
this bug is forbidding (almost) all updates to testing.

Sending a message to control@ to close a bug with NO EXPLANATION sent
to the submitter is not acceptable. In this case, until libc6 depends
on libdb1-compat so that upgrades from woody work correctly, the bug
can't be closed. If you feel there is some reason that libc6 should
not be supporting partial upgrades from woody (a definate change from
Debian's usual policy in this manner), you can send an explanation,
but I don't think anyone will find it sufficient.
Until libc6{,.1} depends on libdb1-compat, these bugs should remain open, so
that this brokenness does not affect sarge.
Bug reopened, originator not changed.

Sure, but that's a *different* bug. Which you're welcome to submit
(or just accept that it's been fixed in our CVS, and the next version
has the dependancy set).
I do appologise for not cc:'ing the bug notifiying that I was closing
the bug because it wasn't current (apache has been upgraded and works
fine now).

Oh, please. You closed all of them, including the one that was reopened
with the explanation that it needed the dependency.

Being fixed in your CVS does not hold the broken package out of sarge. Having
the RC bug open in the BTS does.
> the bug because it wasn't current (apache has been upgraded and works

It does not fix apache on systems that partially upgrade to some sarge/sid
packages. Until it does, the bug should remain open. If retitling it would
help you, I can do that.

I completely disagree. This bug is critical; someone installing
unstable libc6 on a woody system (which I do often! If you use pinning
to get a new version of one package from unstable, you WILL get
unstable's libc6 now!) will break their apache. That's not acceptable
at all.
Unless someone gives me a reason not to, I intend to upload a new libc6
with libdb1-compat and the MIPS msq.h fix. I'll check for any other
bug reports which should be addressed at the same time.

The other is the Alpha stxncpy bug, which I am currently investigating.

- debian/packages.d/glibc-doc.mk: change texi2html processed file from
chapters.texi to libc.texinfo. Closes: #159417
- debian/packages.d/libc-{dbg,pic,prof}.mk: fix /usr/doc removal
compilation failure.
- debian/libc/DEBIAN/postinst: Fix 'grep -v' failure if the size of
/etc/ld.so.nohwcap is 0.
- debian/rules.d/control.mk: Generate libc-opt control information.
.
- Updating 2.2.9x fixes LSB 1.2 compliance. Closes: #156821
- debian/control: add Depends: libdb1-compat.
Until woody, libdb1 is included in libc6 package. However after sarge,
libdb1 support is removed. libdb1-compat contains libdb1 which is
formerly provided by libc6. Now libc6 depends on libdb1-compat,
so upgrading from woody to sarge does not break any libdb1 issues.

* Ben Collins <bcollins@debian.org>
- Make sparc64 build use gcc-3.2.
- Update all config options to not use --disable-sanity-checks, since we
are actually using gcc-3.2 for everything.
- Patch cleanups.
- Re-enable optimized libs. Includes a simple mechanism which should fix
the conflicting symbols during libc/libc-opt upgrade scenarios. This
means that libc6-v9, libc6-i586 and libc6-i686 are back in full swing.
- Remove all references to /usr/doc symlink crap, which is deprecated.
