Perhaps "important" is too strong, this may even be wishlist, but:

15+MB of space required for a 30k executable??

Would it be too much trouble to pull out xauth for us ssh users?

Thanks!

Yes, it's wishlist. The strength of your desire to see a change made
has no bearing on a bug's severity.

> 15+MB of space required for a 30k executable??

xauth links against xlibs:

$ objdump -p /usr/bin/X11/xauth | grep NEEDED
  NEEDED      libXmuu.so.1
  NEEDED      libXext.so.6
  NEEDED      libX11.so.6
  NEEDED      libc.so.6

xbase-clients contains X clients that link against the X libraries.

> Would it be too much trouble to pull out xauth for us ssh users?

Yes. People would still have to install xlibs, and they'd complain
about that, too.

That much makes sense to me. I would expect to have to download *some*
X11 library stuff for xauth, but what I downloaded seemed excessive.

I'm certainly not qualified enough to make packaging decisions, but will
only ask that you consider some means of stripping xauth (since it is
very useful without the rest of X, and the other packages in the package
really add nothing except more dependencies) in the future.

My case is that I need to run an X app remotely to manage a firewall
installed in the machine (a Merilus Firecard, with Java app) and I am
behind a NAT proxy. Things like glxgears (the mesa dependency, I'm
sure), xftcache (the freetype dependency) and startx do me no good with
the box so many miles away.

Perhaps there is room to reshuffle some of these around? Surely there
can be better places to put a couple of these few executables with some
of the heavier dependencies, leaving xbase-clients a bit leaner.
glxgears and xftcache certainly seem like they would be well off homed
in another (more closely related) package.

I don't mean to ask much, and I hope I'm not.

Mark me wishlist if you must; I petition for "normal" ;-)

regards,
Chris

Well, think about it. Such things are highly subjective. You can read
about the meanings of Debian bug severities at:

http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer

The definitions are not perfectly objective, but they are a little
better than letting the submitter's annoyance level dictate the
severity.

The bug report is a feature request; you're requesting a new package.
Therefore "wishlist" is the proper severity.

What you, and other people who have complained that they "just want
xauth and nothing else" really want is a simple tool for manipulating
.Xauthority files. Presumably this would be a clone of the existing
xauth without the "generate" functionality (see xauth(1x)).

Such a version of xauth would not, I think, need to link against the X
libraries at all; a few simple utility functions from the X libraries
could be duplicated in its source code, but nothing as complex as
XOpenDisplay() which is used only by the "generate" function.

Such a utility would be packaged separately, or included in the xutils
package. Which of these courses of action would be taken would likely
depend on how XFree86 felt about including such a tool in a future
upstream release. This tool -- perhaps it could be called "minixauth"
or "uxauth" ("u" for the Greek "mu" meaning "micro" in SI prefix
nomenclature) -- would need to be licensed under MIT/X11 terms to be
acceptable to XFree86.

I also had to hunt down and install xauth to use X-over-ssh on a P-166
with 80 MB RAM and text-only hardware. It is the sole server for an AIDS
charity I do volunteer work for, and I try to keep it lean until it can
be replaced--of course, it will probably become the new VPN router in
another county, so it may still run an X client then, too.

It would, of course, also have to be accepted by the SSH people, so that
ssh would know to try uxauth, then xauth, not to mention a lot of
possible now-and-future hands-on X forwarders. Or, you can add one more
entry to /etc/alternatives. Me, I just 'dpkg -P xbase-clients, libdps1
xlibmesa3' after copying xauth to /usr/local/bin. Works great, and no
need to bother Branden Robinson with questions. Why shouldn't passwd(1)
depend on Display Postscript and OpenGL?

IMHO, this is not necessary. The X11 library overhead is a red
herring. In most situations, you need them anyway to run X11
applications. I find the dependencies on xlibmesa3 and libdps1 more
troublesome, and it shouldn't be too complicated to remove them.

No, but I'm not going to do that.

It would take about half an hour for someone who bellyaches about this
problem to make a source package out of xc/programs/xauth, build-depend
on xlibs-dev and xutils, and have an alternative xauth package that is
statically linked against libXmuu, libXext, and libX11.

Please, do so. I will fully support you in this endeavor as it will get
a lot of people off my back.

I'm not sure "tiny-xauth" would be the right name for such a package,
given that it won't be smaller than the normal xauth executable. Maybe
"static-xauth". It could either divert the normal xauth or
Conflict/Replace/Provide xbase-clients. (It will have to do one or the
author because some packages Build-Depend on xbase-clients for xauth.)

So, let's chat about this on debian-x and see what can be done.

Why? They cause most of the bloat.

Why do you think static linking is required? In the situation that
sparked this thread (xauth + ssh), dynamic linking is enough because
on the remote systems, xlibs is required anyway, otherwise you
wouldn't have any applications to which you can forward connections
(some obscure cases involving clx ignored).

Hello,

I think it's the time to ressurect this bug: it was closed as
'wontfix' when there was an monolithic X tree, and now it should be
easy to split out 'xauth' package depending only to libx11-6 and
libxau6.

Attached is the patch which splits out xauth to the independent
package. This package will depend only to x11-common, libxmuu1,

Subject: xauth
Date: Tue, 8 May 2007 01:29:34 +0200
Hi,

To get xauth, one currently has to get (but note that I had previously
pulled in libxp6 libxt6 libxtst6 and their dependencies):

% sudo aptitude --without-recommends install xbase-clients
[...]
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  fontconfig-config libdrm2 libfontconfig1 libfs6 libgl1-mesa-glx libxaw7
  libxcursor1 libxfixes3 libxft2 libxi6 libxkbfile1 libxmu6 libxmuu1
  libxpm4 libxrandr2 libxrender1 libxss1 libxtrap6 libxv1 libxxf86dga1
  libxxf86vm1 xbase-clients
0 packages upgraded, 22 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/2269kB of archives. After unpacking 6590kB will be used.

It's not as large as it used to be, but it's a bit more annoying :)

Splitting out xauth would be a Good Idea(TM). In this particular case,
I just want to run an X program over an ssh session; that's a legitimate,
even a relatively common use case, I think.

Maybe xbase-clients in general could be further split to separate things
that don't need all this font and OpenGL stuff. But xauth should be the
first to go.

# apt-get install xbase-clients
...
The following extra packages will be installed:
  cpp cpp-4.1 gcc-4.1-base libdrm2 libfs6 libgl1-mesa-glx libpng12-0
  libxcursor1 libxfixes3 libxi6 libxinerama1 libxkbfile1 libxmuu1 libxrandr2
  libxss1 libxtrap6 libxtst6 libxv1 libxxf86dga1 libxxf86vm1
...
After unpacking 21.9MB of additional disk space will be used.

And afterwards:
# ldd `which xauth`
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0x8000000000000000)
        libXau.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXau.so.6 (0x200000000004c000)
        libXext.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x2000000000060000)
        libXmuu.so.1 => /usr/lib/libXmuu.so.1 (0x2000000000098000)
        libX11.so.6 => /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x20000000000b0000)
        libc.so.6.1 => /lib/libc.so.6.1 (0x20000000002a4000)
        libXdmcp.so.6 => /usr/lib/libXdmcp.so.6 (0x20000000004f8000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x2000000000510000)
        /lib/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 (0x2000000000000000)

Of the extra packages installed to meet xbase-clients dependencies,
the only one necessary for xauth was libxmuu1.

All I want at present is to ssh in to a headless, small disk (1G)
virtual machine and run xterm.

Timo for actually doing that work instead of just complaining about it.

Cheers,

Hurrah! And yes, thankyou thankyou Timo.

Any idea of when it'll be in unstable for arm and ia64?
