Subject: netcat: openbsd's rewrite of netcat might help some ppl... or not
Date: Sat, 04 May 2002 19:29:24 +0300
Package: netcat
Version: 1.10-21
Severity: wishlist

Just noticed that OpenBSD's netcat rewrite has support for IPv6, UNIX
sockets and socks4/5 - and thus could be useful for some people - at
least bug #142898 is about socks4/5... too bad their current version
(http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.bin/nc/netcat.c) seems
to be missing some of netcat's useful features (compare debian's netcat
w/ their cvs v1.20 & v1.47 and see).

Skimming their cvs log I noticed some bugs that could apply to debian's
netcat too; I'll submit more bugreports about them later...

Could you please elaborate on your tagging #145798 +wontfix? Debian
users are stuck with a netcat from 1998 that isn't maintained while the
OpenBSD netcat has support for IPv6, Unix sockets etc.

If you don't have time to package a newer version, I can help; if you
just don't want to package it, let me know, I'll ITP netcast-openbsd
instead.

I didn't want to replace what we have, but if this bug is really an RFP,
I'll check it out, see if there's anything to be done to make using the
alternatives system work, and put a package together. Ping me again if this
isn't ready by the end of the week.

Consider yourself pinged. :)

I took the liberty of grabbing Fedora's packages as they're based on
OpenBSD's implementation and added a patch to maintain full command line
argument compatibility.

You can find it at:

retitle 145798 ITP: netcat-openbsd -- TCP/IP swiss army knife
reassign 145798 wnpp
thanks

Due to feature requests (UNIX domain sockets, SOCKS) that are difficult
to implement in the current, aging netcat code base, I have decided to
once again look into packaging OpenBSD's version. At the present date it
seems very mature and has been used by Fedora for several years.

I will continue attempting to keep "classic" netcat functional for the
hardcore traditionalists (yes, there are a few open patches...), and will
not change any defaults until at least lenny+1. A transition plan will be
worked out soon in concert with Ubuntu (who are interested in moving on
this more quickly).

Details for the netcat-openbsd package will be essentially the same
except for a note about its origin, so I have not added the standard ITP
boilerplate while retitling this bug. I hope no one minds.

Description:
 netcat-openbsd - TCP/IP swiss army knife
Closes: 142898 145798 348564 461317
Changes:
 netcat-openbsd (1.89-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Initial release. (Closes: #145798)
   * Includes support for:
     - IPv6 (Closes: #461317)
     - Unix domain sockets (Closes: #348564)
     - SOCKS (Closes: #142898)
   * Conflict with netcat versions older than netcat-base, so that we can use
     alternatives.
   * Port some features over from netcat-base:
     - Exit successfully when printing help text (-h), and include the Debian
       revision.
     - Add the -q (quit on standard input EOF) flag.
     - Add support for specifying ports by name (/etc/services). Unlike the
old hack for this, nc will first try to find a named service, then fall
back to numeric parsing, so no escaping is needed.
