Package: php4 Version: 4:4.1.2-1 Severity: wishlist With short_open_tag in php.ini set to on it is inconvenient to serve xml or XHTML-Documents with php, which is becoming more important right now. The typical first line of an xml-Document looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> This causes a parse error with the current default configuration. Work-arounds exist but are tedious. I understand the reason for wanting this changed, but I don't believe (based on extrapolation of my experience elsewhere) that the percentage of users of the Debian packages who are doing fully-formed XML, versus the percentage of users of the Debian packages who use -- or write -- PHP scripts using short tags, is great enough to justify the change at present. Adam, what's your feeling? Steve Langasek postmodern programmer

Adam, what's your feeling? > > Steve Langasek Well, it was a wishlist. :) In principle, I agree with him, but in practice, we'd run the risk of breaking a LOT of 3rd party PHP scripts out there, were we to change the default. Perhaps a not-too-scientific audit of tag preference in current (packaged) scripts wouldn't be a bad idea. I'll be looking at a large number of php.ini changes post-Woody, however, and this is something to be considered. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, nothing but "this package is completely broken" bugs are going to be looked at for Woody, but wishlist items like this are certainly on the drawing board for the big re-org for Woody+1. There's no harm in keeping it open and considering it, at any rate. :) ... Adam

Package: php5 Hi PHP team, I was thinking that maybe it could be a good time to revisit this wishlist bug and turn short_tags Off by default. We would need to check all revdeps in the archive, prepare lintian check, etc. (and of course add debian/NEWS about it). Also we probably should write some paragraph into release notes with all the stuff which has changed in PHP 5.4. Hey Ondřej do you want me to try and take this one? What would be the easiest way to check what PHP programs are employing short tags? I would end up installing each one and using grep (Or something stronger in Python if needed) to scan the installed files and look for short tags. I will just make up a CSV of what programs do or do not use short tags. I have done a decent amount of PHP programming and I have never seen a program use ASP like tags.

I suggest using wiki to track the checks, something like: http://wiki.debian.org/PHP/54Transition There's also a git repository with bunch of tools I have used to track PHP 5.4 transition located at anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-php/php-maint-tools.git Do you have alioth account, if so please add yourself to the pkg-php group, if not, please create one, and add yourself, so you can have write access to git repos. > I have done a decent amount of PHP programming and I have never seen a > program use ASP like tags. Me neither, but it's the baggage we have to drag for now (in wheezy freeze time). O. -- Ondřej Surý <ondrej@sury.org>

Sean, now it would be a good time to do the archive check and maybe filling a wishlist bug (or even writing that check yourself) against lintian to check the short open tags. I will be disabling short_open_tag in next upload of PHP 5.5 O. Awesome! I will look into writing the check for Lintian, it will be a good learning experience.
