Package: jikes
Version: 1.15-0.1
Severity: critical
I have code that, with this Jikes (1.15-0.1) works. With Jikes 1.15b, I get
constant DatabaseManager exceptions. This is the EXACT SAME code.
The Jikes 1.15b in Debian IS NOT SUITABLE FOR OUR DISTRIBUTION.

I'm getting more and more the same feeling. I will file for removal of
Jikes 1.15b from the distribution tomorrow and I'll try to put back
the 1.15 if there are no objections.

The other option it seems would be to just do a new upload of jikes 1:1.15-1.
This would avoid archive acrobatics of filing for removal and then
reinclusion, and would also mean that people automatically get the "upgrade"
from the more broken (IMHO) 1.15b to the less broken 1:1.15. And I guess it
has the cosmetic disadvantage that you're rolling the epoch, but hey.
Anyway, just a suggestion; I'll be happy if 1.15 comes back either way. :)

Collin Watson has the same suggestion. I'll pass the 1:1.15-1 to him tonight.
It will also include the packages for classpath wrappers. That is, a package
called
jikes-kaffe, jikes-gij, etc... so that invoking
jikes-kaffe will invoke jikes with kaffe classes automatically without
people haing to worry about classpaths. At least this was the best
solutions I got from debian-java list.

That sounds good and I like the epoch option.
Out of curiousity: have you passed along these bug reports to upstream?
They might find it valuable to learn about these problems for whenever
they issue their next release.
Thanks,
John

Collin Watson said he was going to talk to upstream. Next 2 weeks are going
to be pretty busy for me so I'm not sure how much Debian stuff I will be
able to do :(

Just curious: is jikes 1:1.15-1 likely to appear in time for woody? Not to
try and rush things, but jython is currently unbuildable in woody, and if
jikes 1.15 is not coming back then I'm going to need to lobby for the
inclusion of the jikes-1.14 package in woody followed by a modification of
jython to build against that instead. And if we're releasing on May 1 then
we're running out of time. :)
Thanks - Ben.

I think that at this point it is irrelevent if 1.15 is going to be back for woody
or not. It is more important to say that 1.15b is broken and 1.14 is _much_ better
than 1.15b. 1.15b doesn't compile code correctly.
I don't have time to fix things in jikes at this time [it's a bad time] until
April 22. I've authorized Colin Watson to do a NMU if there is a need.
Nevertheless, I'll send him a fixed package in a few minutes. I really _hope_ that
1:1.15 will be in woody.

I've just built this, and it'll be uploaded before today's dinstall.
Adam set the urgency to high, so providing the ftpmasters install it
quickly (it has two new packages, jikes-gij and jikes-kaffe) and nobody
reports any nasty problems, that version should migrate into woody
shortly.
Sorry for the delay - there was a bit of back-and-forth needed between
Adam and myself.

Changes:
jikes (1:1.15-1) unstable; urgency=high
.
* Rollback to jikes 1.15 as 1.15b seems to be too broken for any
use. (closes: #141980, #141278, #141306, #140533)
* Added wrappers for all java classpaths [Kaffe, gij, etc.] that

properly set with kaffe's classes.
* javac now points to one of the wrappers [if installed] in the order
given in README.Debian
