Hi.

I recall that there was a discussion about this, but I can't find it
anymore, it is not recorded in the bug report.

Anyway, I've made a patch for the anchor problem in devel/people

It now generates three anchors: lastname, lastname_firstname, nickname.
Any of these is omitted if the anchor is previously defined.
As anchors must not be nested (per the W3C definition) I've splitted
them: the nickname anchor is an empty one, lastname is around the
lastname, lastname_firstname around the firstname. There is no real
need for this, just playing around :)

Patch attached.

Frank

Subject: PATCH: people.pl
<http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2002/debian-www-200211/msg00376.html>

I just recently (12th of march) asked for if someone has come up with a
different approach:
<http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2003/debian-www-200303/msg00112.html>

Unfortunately noone ever reacted to that one. It is sometimes quite
frustrating to offer help when people just object but can't come up with
anything else.

 Have fun,

TBH I was meaning to apply that last patch of yours, I just didn't find the
time. Latency often makes my ssh sessions laggy, so I don't particularly
like testing these changes.

When I wish to obstruct a change, you'll likely hear it from me explicitely :>

Howdy,

Frank, your patch for 134606 lowercases the surname anchors, which
will break existing links. Would you please submit a patch that
doesn't or explain why they should be lowercase?

Will investigate this. But it will be delayed for a few days by some
other issues.

Well, the patch that doesn't would be the submitted with removed "lc" I
guess. I'm not quite sure which patch was finally used because I
offered one too. Could you maybe provide the diff that was finally used,
so we might be able to take a look at it?

 So long,

D'oh. I thought Joy was going to apply Frank's patch, so that's
what I tested, but it looks like he meant to apply yours:

 http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2002/debian-www-200211/msg00376.html

I'll test (and hopefully apply) it this evening.

Howdy,

I've applied Alfie's patch to avoid duplicate anchors. You can
only link to the first person with a given surname, however, so
I'd like to keep this open until we come up with a solution that
provides a unique link for each person.

I googled "www.debian.org/devel/people" with some exclusion:
 http://www.google.com/search?q=%22debian.org%2Fdevel%2Fpeople%22+-bug+-site:debian.org
don't be afraid, it says thousands of hits,
but actually, it's only tens and their ghosts :-p
and trash remained lists/bug related pages, then I got only 1 page has anchors:
 http://svn.uvw.ru/resume/resume.txt
so now, keeping existing links is really needed now?
if not, using all part of the names as an anchor make this issue much simpler :-D
