Is it possible to add the following items to /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf?
I maintain ptex-* packages, which contain ASCII pTeX(one of Japanized TeX
implementation). To make kpathsea search for those pTeX .sty files etc., I
wrote a little script to add paths into /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf and call it from
postinst or by hand. But a guy pointed out that it's Serious Policy Violation
and filed a RC(see Bug#125793). Also some users complain that it's annoying
to modify texmf.cnf manually whenever tetex-bin is upgraded and texmf.cnf is
overwritten. I guess including the following paths into tetex-bin's texmf.cnf
beforehand will fix these problems.

I think this is only a temporary solution and I guess
that tetex should provide a mechanism so that any TeX
related package could add appropriate settings to texmf.cnf
It might be the best if we could generate texmf.cnf
from auxiliary files (like update-vfontcap?), I guess.
I think this is a very serious problem of teTeX so please
show us any idea you have.
Best regards, 2002.2.12

Hi all,
it seems no one would propose any concrete idea, I tried
rough sketch borrowed from update-vfontcap.
It is true that these are very naive so please anyone refine
them.
Bsic idea is to separate the original texmf.cnf into several
parts in /etc/texmf/texmf.d/ and to cat them with update-texmf
script. So any TeX related package, for example ptex-bin, can
add appropriate settings to the generated texmf.cnf if ptex-bin
provides /etc/texmf/texmf.d/20ptex with the appropriate settings.
Further, if 20ptex is a real conffile then it will remain after
removing ptex-bin so it might be better that ptex-bin will generate
/etc/texmf/texmf.d/20ptex with its postinst and remove it with
prerm in case remove.
Everyone, please take this issue seriously; if teTeX does not
provide this kind of mechanism, several TeX related packages
will be with RC bug. (one of them will be my ptex-jtex ;-)
I attached update-texmf and sample separated texmf.cnf's.
# I am testing with the generated texmf.cnf since yesterday
# and it seems to work....
Best regards, 2002.2.24

* stop to install texmf.cnf as a real file but, instead, install separated
files in texmf.d/* and run update-texmf to generate texmf.cnf
Accordingly we modified texconfig so that it will modify 05TeXMF instead
of texmf.cnf directly. So remove texmf.cnf from conffiles and add
separated counterparts. (closes: #69600, #133200) [kohda@debian.org]
* stop to install fmtutil.cnf as a real file but, instead, install it in
fmt.d/00tetex.cnf and run update-fmtutil to generate fmtutil.cnf
So remove fmtutil.cnf from conffiles. (closes: #64914) [kohda@debian.org]
* change TEXMFLOCAL to /usr/local/share/texmf and also add TEXMFOLDLOCAL
