Subject: gpm: Upgrade broke PS/2 mouse
Date: Sun, 20 Jan 2002 11:06:53 -0500
Package: gpm
Version: 1.19.6-9
Severity: normal

gpm's currently reporting,

Jan 20 10:58:31 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[593]: PS/2 mouse failed init
Jan 20 10:58:31 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[593]: oops() invoked from gpm.c(1019)
Jan 20 10:58:31 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[593]: mouse initialization failed: Resource temporarily unavailable

I sync with "testing" fairly frequently, so the upgrade that broke gpm
for me probably happened this month.

The uncommented lines in my /etc/gpm.conf read,

device=/dev/psaux
type=ps2
append=""
repeat_type=msc

Downgrading back to gpm 1.17.8-18.1 fixes the problem, so I'm not
horribly indisposed while this remains pending. Other system
information is,

-- System Information

I hope that's helpful! Thanks,

Yes, upgrading both gpm and libgpmg1 to 1.19.6-10 seems to have fixed it -
thanks!

Subject: Re: gpm: Upgrade breaks PS2 mouse

Curiously, the fix didn't seem to last. I've no idea why not; my
configuration remains unchanged, but 1.19.6-10 stopped working for me.

gpm and libgpmg1 1.19.6-11 still exhibit the same problem;
the mouse just does nothing. Some syslog evidence includes:

Apr  2 08:34:17 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[296]: write_ps2: 4 0, 8
Apr  2 08:34:17 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[296]: write_ps2: 4 1, 0
Apr  2 08:34:17 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[296]: write_ps2: 4 2, 0
Apr  2 08:34:17 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[296]: PS/2 mouse failed init
Apr  2 08:34:17 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[296]: oops() invoked from gpm.c(1019)
Apr 2 08:34:17 niagara /usr/sbin/gpm[296]: mouse initialization failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

It's still not too big a deal for me; downgrading to 1.17.8-18.1
still fixes the problem.

Apologies for the delay in reporting this; things have been busy.

FWIW my kernel is 2.2.19 and my libc6 is 2.2.5-3.

Subject: gpm: but works from commandline for me using ps2 protocol
Date: Tue, 23 Apr 2002 23:52:15 +0200
Package: gpm
Version: 1.19.6-12

Yeah I'm disapointed using any protocol (ps2 or imps2) in gpm.conf and
runing /etc/init.d/gpm start give this error and from cmdline with imps2
protocol.
but setting

gpm -m /dev/psaux -t ps2

work as usual
I hope that info is useful
