Subject: Upgrading to 2.0.7-4 breaks printing
Date: Wed, 02 Jan 2002 14:03:49 +0100
Package: samba
Version: 2.0.7-3.4
Severity: grave

Upgrading from samba 2.0.7-3.4 to 2.0.7-4 broke printing (from windows
clients) on our misc server running with this smb.conf:

-- smb.conf. starts --

# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
# many!) most of which are not shown in this example
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
# to check that you have not many any basic syntactic errors.
#

# This option is important for security. It allows you to restrict
# connections to machines which are on your local network. The

Can you please try the samba 2.0.7-5 package available from my ftp site?
It's apt-gettable using the line

  deb ftp://tennyson.netexpress.net/debian stable local

in your /etc/apt/sources.list. This package is linked against some
libraries that were missing from the dependencies in the -4 package, and
I'd like to know if this fixes the problem for you.

The other troublesome possibility is that the changes made here to
ensure compatibility with 2.0 kernels has broken compatibility with 2.2
kernels. But let's hope first that the recompile has fixed it...

Peter,

In addition to trying the new packages that Steve built, can
you mail us the log files that smbd generated (the file should
be /var/log/smb.)

Your bug report is very detailed in how you have your Samba
server configured, but you did not provide additional information
on what exactly you are seeing. "The upgrade broke printing" is
just half of the story, and the log file should hint at where
the problem is.

If you can send the log before trying the new packages that'd be
great.

Cheers,

Eloy.-

Subject: Samba 2.0.7-4/5 printing problems
Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2002 10:34:52 +0200
Package: samba
Version: 2.0.7-5

Hi

After reading through the BTS, I tried installing the 2.0.7-5 version to
see if it fixed the printing problem and it did not. However I can shed more
light on where the actual problem lies. Using "testparm" one can see that
both 2.0.7-4 and 2.0.7-5 incorrectly handle the "printing = bsd" (and also
"printing = lprng") option:

...
printing = bsd
print command = lp -c -d%p %s; rm %s
lpq command = lpstat -o%p
lprm command = cancel %p-%j
lppause command = lp -i %p-%j -H hold
lpresume command = lp -i %p-%j -H resume
queuepause command = disable %p
queueresume command = enable %p
...

whereas 2.0.7-3.4 correctly sets the commands to

...
printing = bsd
print command = lpr -r -P%p %s
lpq command = lpq -P%p
lprm command = lprm -P%p %j
lppause command =
lpresume command =
queuepause command =
queueresume command =
...

The problem is also present in the 2.0.7-4 Sparc packages.

Apparently I need to study the Uploaders: header more closely. :) This
bug is closed by the latest upload to stable (potato-proposed-updates),
which should not be regarded as an NMU.
