Subject: nmh: show command thinks RFC2646 text/plain messages are not plain text
Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2001 17:35:27 +0100
Package: nmh
Version: 1.0.4+dev-20010115-1
Severity: minor

The show command thinks that MIME messages with
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed
are not just plain text and hands them off to showmimeproc instead
of showproc. But they *are* perfectly plain plain text, as RFC 2646
explains. ATM, few MUAs have adopted RFC 2646 (Mozilla 5 has), so this
isn't a big deal yet, but it means that I can't show a whole sequence
that might contain such messages, as mhshow does its `Press <return> to
show content' thing, which I don't want to disable as it is usually a
good idea.

Strictly speaking, it does think they're plain text, it just doesn't
think they're plain text it can get away with showing itself.
This is arguably correct; after all, you might want to define that
format=flowed messages were displayed in a suitable manner, eg by
rewrapping to fit the width of the terminal.
(The message is passed onto mhshow because show will only display
messages it is sure it can handle, so it leaves messages with unknown
parameters to mhshow. The show(1) man page states that some text
messages will get passed to the showmimeproc.)

There should probably be some way to request that format=flowed is
not passed on to mhshow, in the same way that "charset=" is treated
specially.

Actually, I think that a better approach is just to use mhshow
for everything and tailor it so it behaves nicely (not that I've
done that yet myself :->) In particular, I think you can get it to
print the "Press <return> to show content" message only for some
types of content, and not others. Try adding this to your .mh_profile:

mhshow-show-text/plain: less '%F'

Just thought I'd point out that nmh isn't in breach of the RFCs here,
so it's really a feature request, rather than a bug.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
i've just tested nmh version 1.5 (with default config)
with regard to that ancient bug, and as far as
i can tell mails in text/plain with format=flowed now
are displayed by the normal showproc. i'm closing the bug.

az
