Though Emacs has a potential ability to display and input
various characters in the world, it cannot show its full
ability because of poor default font setting.

The default font setting fails to display non-ISO-8859-1
characters such as Arabic, Chinese (traditional and simplified),
Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Lao, Polish,
Russian, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. Thus, non-ISO-8859-1
people have to configure Emacs to use their mother tongue.

This situation is easily solved by having a resource setting
like /etc/X11/Xresources/emacs20 file with the contents of

Emacs.Font: fontset-standard

Please read info files (file emacs-e20, node fontsets)
for detail of the meaning of this line. You can easily
test the effect of this file by hitting C-h H in Emacs.

Hi,

I am trying to clean up the long list of old Emacs bugs in Debian.

This may have been so in Emacs 20, but Emacs 21 handles this just fine.

This has nasty side effects, e.g. you may get a font without bold or
italic variants.

No difference visible here, so I went ahead and closed the bug. Feel
free to reopen if you see something different.
