Subject: Keep xsane out of Debian releases
Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2022 19:25:13 +0200
Package: xsane
Version: 0.999-12
Severity: serious
This is a placeholder RC bug to prevent xsane from entering testing
and making it to a Debian release. Xsane has not been maintained by
the Upstream author since 2014. Even the current fork does not show
much further development.
Because of the bugs in the GUI I don't think the current version
is suitable for a Debian release.
Should the fork develop positively, I will close this bug.

Good to know, thanks!
Are you aware of an alternative SANE GUI that would be a good
replacement for xsane?

Please consider reducing the severity of the bug to allow the inclusion of xsane in the next stable release.
xsane has no equivalent software available. Its GUI allows you to use advanced features of SANE not available graphically in other GUIs.
xsane is usable in the currently packaged version (removed in testing due to this bug). It does not have any bug that prevent me from using it on a daily basis.
At https://popcon.debian.org/by_inst xsane is ranked 2346, by comparison sane is ranked 7457.
Its development is low in the last years, the last commit is from 6 months ago ( https://gitlab.com/sane-project/frontend/xsane ), but this is not a reason to remove a software that is useful, usable, popular and no equivalent available.
Thank you very much.

I agree. As long as there are no alternative, please keep xsane in the
bookworm release. While the GUI has it's flaws it does NOT render the
entire package unusable so removing it (when no alternative exist) is a
bit drastic.

I am still a user of xsane, and would like to continue using it.
If the current fork does not well-maintained enough for you,
would you agree to me adopting xsane?

Hello Adrian,
I was hoping that the upstream will manage to fix the problems until
the new release sane-backends. So far it doesn't look like that
unfortunately.
I therefore close this bug so that in xsane can be published in
bookworm.
I am happy to continue to maintain xsane.

Subject: xsane: Another vote for XSane!

Package: xsane
Version: 0.999-11ubuntu1
Followup-For: Bug #1013933
Thanks for keeping XSane alive in Debian.
I am a long-time user myself, out of necessity: I have tried several times
to use simple-scan (the only alternative I can find), and it just doesn’t
offer the functionality of XSane. XSane is clunky and buggy, but it gets the
job done. I have provided patches for XSane in the past, and will continue
to do so when I can find the time. It’s a shame that there’s no better
alternative, but I fear that flatbed scanning is increasingly a niche area,
as people now more and more use their phones to scan documents on the rare
occasions that they actually need a scan of a paper document. Therefore,
doing our best to keep XSane working is probably the best we can manage,
absent someone coming up with the sort of investment that saw simple-scan
created.
