Subject: libva1=1.3.0-1 with i965 makes all video "solid black" with mpv --hwdec=vaapi
Date: Sat, 05 Apr 2014 04:33:22 -0700
Package: i965-va-driver
Version: 1.2.2-2
Severity: normal

With the 1.3.0-1 version currently in unstable and i965-va-driver=1.2.2-2 on ivy bridge chip,

$ mpv vc1.mkv --no-config --no-resume-playback --hwdec=vaapi --vo=opengl

results in a solid black screen while the sound works. The vc1.mkv
clip can be found at [1]. I found this happens with every hardware
decodable clip I tried including h264 clips. The vc1 clip however
neatly demonstrates that the problem is specifically with hardware
decoding as seeking with left and right keys leads to (unrelated) decoding errors
and a fallback to software decoding, at which point the video
reappears!

[1] https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60598588/vc1.mkv (29 M)

The problem goes away on downgrading to libva1=1.2.1-2.

I've just uploaded intel-vaapi-driver 1.3.0-1. It should appear on a
mirror near you in the next couple of hours. Could you please check if
the problem persists with the new version?

Yep, the problem remains the same as described with
i965-va-driver=1.3.0-1. I even tried a rebuilt mpv=0.3.7-1 package with
all the news libraries, but that didn't help either.

I have just discovered that
--vo=vaapi --hwdec=vaapi works as expected
--vo=opengl --hwdec=vaapi exhibits the broken behaviour described

So it seems to be an opengl interop issue. The problem persists with
libva/i965-driver 1.3.1+ from git. I'll report this upstream.

From the patch in [1] it looks like a libva issue. Thus reassigning to
libva. Could you please try the patch and report back if that works for

According to the discussion on the upstream mailing list, this bug only
happens with specific versions of xorg-server. A fixed version of
xorg-server (2:1.15.1-1) got uploaded some minutes ago so this bug
should disappear once you upgrade xorg-server. Upstream also
applied a workaround to libva for broken xorg-server version.

I'll close the bug with the upload of the next upstream version.

Cheers
