Subject: Unstable kernel-package fails compiling the kernel
Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 16:57:20 +0100
Package: kernel-package
Version: 7.34

When it compiles the kernel with "make-kpkg kernel_image" , it calls "ld"
with the option "-oformat binary", a hyphen is missing, it must use
"--oformat binary" instead

I am using Debian unstable upgraded a couple of hours ago (Feb 22, 15hs).

reassign 87037 binutils
thanks,

Hi,

kernel-package does not call ld directly, this is the kernel
makefile breaking. I think this is a critical bug in bintuils, which
changed its user interface suddenly, with no thought to backwards
compatibility, or to an upgrade path.

Actually, backwards compatability was always there. --oformat has worked
since early on. IIRC, also, the kernel cabal (aka Alan Cox and Linus) was
notified that this was coming at least two kernel revisions ago (possibly
even prior to the 2.4.0 release). Why they chose not to fix it is beyond
me, but as it stands, upstream decided to drop -oformat and I agree on
their reasons. My latest upload notes the change in the postinst, which
is the best that I can do, given the circumstances. As it stands, I don't
consider it a bug, personally, since it should've been addressed sooner by
kernel folk and also since I've now addressed it in the postinst. I'll
keep this bug and the others open until after tomorrow's dinstall run, but
after that, they're all probably going to be closed.

This is the fifth bug report that I've gotten about the same thing today
and I'm expecting at least another five before the dinstall run tomorrow
:-)

well, I think asking about this in the preinst, and letting
people abort, would be a better option, since then people choosing
the old -oformat switch would still be able to do so. (you can
explain what a bad idea it is in the preinst message, and perhaps
 mentions <kernel-source>/arch/{i386,mips}/boot/Makefile)
