Comments/Problems:

Everything works fine (except that I get the "red screen" if I boot linux26),
until after rebooting the installed kernel-image.  Then it fails, with
either linux (2.4.27) or linux26 (2.6.8).  Both of them Oops in the same
manner.  I'll show the 2.6.8 output here:

And that's where it got stuck, requiring power-off.  Please forgive any typos.

I rebooted with "init=/bin/sh", moved the i810_audio.ko file to a different
name, and then everything came up normally (except for those two "null symbol
found" lines, which are still showing up).  It even loaded the ALSA drivers
instead, since it had no OSS one.

On the next reboot, though, it loaded the i810_audio driver under its
new name, having somehow defeated my feeble attempts at preventing it
from loading.  The proper long-term solution, of course, was to rename
the module *back* to i810_audio.ko and blacklist it in both discover
and hotplug, so that it does not load automatically, even if the kernel
image happens to be upgraded later.

IFAIK the i810_audio module should be the correct OSS module for your 
hardware.
I've seen other reports mentioning the same sort of problem [1,2,3].
[1] has the exact same boot messages as you.
The submitter for [3] mentioned the problem solved itself (I would guess 
after installing the alsa packages); he was able to remove the 
blacklisting of the module he added himself. [3] has different audio 
hardware though.

The dump probably happens because the OSS (i810_audio) audio driver does 
not like something about your hardware. I think you will have more luck 
with the ALSA (snd_intel8x0) modules. I would think this problem should 
be solved after you install the alsa packages as IIRC they include 
blacklisting for the OSS modules.

Can you confirm if this is correct?

Yes, the ALSA module loads without problems.  I can't verify whether
installing the alsa-* packages blacklists the i810_audio driver, because
I no longer have the laptop with me.  In any event, I kept the manual
blacklist entries in place, because I don't ever want the user to come
back to me saying "the laptop doesn't boot, or respond to ctrl-alt-del,
and by the way it says something about Oops and a lot of numbers on
the screen".

(He may have to bring it back to me today, depending on whether I got the
PPPOE configuration right on the first try.  I won't know until later.)

Same as mine, except that I fumbled around more than he did.

Definitely milder symptoms.  He didn't mention having to boot with
init=/bin/sh as I did, or doing any chroot tricks from the install CD.

Hmm.  I don't know whether this is a difference between pre-rc2 and
whichever installer you used, or a difference caused by the presence of
a "winmodem".

Hmmm. But mine has the winmodem too. Even got it working with sl-modem.

Are you interested in persuing this further? You should at least be 
willing to provided further info on request and be willing to test a 
patch.
If so, do you want to try filing a bug upstream or contacting an 
appropriate kernel mailing list yourself?
