Subject: dhcpcd: dhcpcd .70-3 incompatible with 2.1.* kernels
Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 00:59:21 -0400 (EDT)
Package: dhcpcd
Version: 0.70-3

dhcpcd shipped with Debian 2.0 and 2.1 doesn't work due to changes in
development kernels. There is a version 1.3.8 available at
ftp://phystech.dyn.ml.org/pub/ . Evidently, it is based on the same code
but has a new developer. It works for me.

It's very likely you know all this, so sorry to bug you about something
you're working on. I do think it's good to have a bug report on record at
least. In case you can suggest how you're planning to handle dhcp with
kernel 2.2, I'd appreciate the tip.

Thanks,
Andrew

(My cable modem provider was getting upset that I wasn't using DHCP!)

"dhcpcd" 1.3.8 doesn't work with 2.0.x kernels. There is a
preliminary package for "dhcpcd-sv" in:

  http://www.cse.msu.edu/~dunham/debian/dhcpcd-sv

I need to clean up the stuff in /usr/doc, update it from 1.3.7 ->
1.3.8 and then I'll upload it.

Like the subject says, version 1.3.17 is apparently required for 2.2
kernels. I don't know if older versions work or not.

Version "1.3.17" is a completely different program (compared to 0.xx
versions) which doesn't work on 2.0 kernels. You can get it as the
"dhcpcd-sv" package. (I'll update the description of the dhcpcd
package when I get time.)

The new version is a completely different program rewritten by another
author who is anything but careful with his code (early versions would
segfault because of some pretty basic mistakes). I was hoping that
someone would fix the original program, but apparently it hasn't
happened. Hopefully most of the bugs are out of 1.3.17, and hopefully
it has most of the feature set of the original program.

(I actually uploaded version 1.3.16, since the ftp site for the new
dhcpcd disappeared and I was forced to get the source from a RPM
source package.)

Ah. I thought it was too obvious. Sorry for wasting your time.

1.3.17 doesn't appear to be working against what I believe to be an NT
server, although it worked at home against an ISC server. I haven't
made any effort to find out what's broken, though. It claims to not be
getting any response from the server, which is odd as my 2.0 setup gets
one. I'll try out the debs later.

I got mine from ftp://ftp.phystech.com/pub/ if that's any use.
