Package: diald
Version: 0.16.4-11
The last kernel that I could make work with diald was 2.1.65. 2.1.76 and
2.1.77 fail miserably. It will establish a PPP connection but nothing can
get out.

Mmmh, I don't think it's diald because once the link is up,
it has nothing left to do...
From the linux-kernel mailing list, I saw that there has been a
lot of problems with pppd lately... You might want to peek in the
archives.
What's your /etc/diald/diald.options ?

That is not entirely true. It needs to monitor the connection
to see when it should be taken down (I aggressively take down my
connection when idle).
If one uses dctrl, on can see package queue's, and numerical
and graphical load averages, and time to next alrm, etc. None of this
works under 2.1.7+ kernels.
Unfotunately, that means diald pulls up a connection, which
never really goes down.

The trouble appears to be the routing entries; the routing stuff is so
messed up I can't make heads or tails out of it. Thus pppd thinks
it's working by establishing the connection but nothing goes out
because of the fouled up routing tables.
pppd by itself works fine.

Can you try the latest and greatest 0.16.5-1 ?
Otherwise, you can try:
1) Tell diald how to do routing (use addroute and delroute)
2) Don't reroute (use -reroute)

Is this bug still present on diald 0.16.5-3 ?
I don't run diald on a 2.1.x machine so it's difficult to tell...

I have not tried yet. Did you incorporate the patches on the
diald list? I am using those, and they work quite well.

Well, it does seem to be working now, although it's been a long time
since I last tried. There was probably a different problem before.
This time, I had to deal with a stubborn kernel that wouldn't want to
properly load the type of raw socket that diald wants automatically.
Once I didn't compile it as a module, everything worked, but this is
hardly diald's fault, so feel free to close it as far as I'm concerned.

According to John, these patches are no more necessary. Would you give a try to
0.16.5-3 and tell me if it works for you ? I could then close this bug.
